About Enkai Africa
Luxury Safaris & Camps

Where our name comes from:

Mt. Lenkai (also known as Ol’doinyo Lengai) rises about 2100 meters above the East African Valley floor to 2880m.

Ol’doinyo Lenkai means “Mountain of God”, and it originates from the Maa language (Maasai’s language) from the Ngorongoro area.

The Maasai people conduct prayers to “Enkai” or “Engai”, whom the Maasai believe is the creator of all things on this active volcanic mountain.

Ol’doinyo Lengai is the only active volcanic mountain in the East African Rift Valley region, which attracts many geologists worldwide for research purposes.

It is the only active volcano on Earth spewing lava with temperatures so low that the lava appears black in sunlight, rather than having the red glow familiar to most lava.

For the Maasai people, God dominates both life and death. Their daily life allows for expressions showing reverence and thanks to the divinity through their prayer rituals during significant ceremonies.

There is something about safari life that makes you forget all your sorrows and feel as if you had drunk half a bottle of champagne — bubbling over with heartfelt gratitude for being alive.
