Getting to Tanzania:

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is located 46 kilometers (29 miles) east of Arusha, Tanzania’s most prominent Northern safari circuit.

Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) is Tanzania’s primary airport, located 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of Dar es Salaam. Visitors to the southern parks enter through the latter.

You may fly or drive between reserves from Arusha or Dar es Salaam. Some domestic flights depart from Kilimanjaro International Airport, but most flights to reserves depart from Arusha Airport (ARK), which is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of town.

Passports, Visas & Other Requirements

Entry requirements can change, so please contact your local Tanzania embassy to verify the information below is current.

  • A passport is required for all foreign visitors and has to be valid for at least six months.
  • Passports must have a clean and a full visa page for endorsement.
  • When arriving from a yellow-fever-infected country in Africa or the Americas a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required.
  • Citizens of most countries require a visa. A list of countries that don’t need a visa is available.
  • Visas are best obtained in advance through an official online visa-application portal, but they can also be obtained through your local Tanzania Embassy or High Commission.
  • Visas can also be obtained on arrival but this is a lengthy process that can take one to two hours.

If you’re travelling to Tanzania, you must have a negative COVID-19 (RT-PCR) test result taken in the 72 hours before your arrival, complete the Ministry of Health’s online surveillance form in the 24 hours before arrival and take a rapid test on arrival.

Depending on your origin or transit countries you may also be required to undertake 14 days quarantine at your own cost. Confirm COVID-19 requirements with local authorities and your airline(s) ahead of travel. Our global travel advice remains do not travel due to the risk of COVID-19 and travel disruptions.
