The Big 5

Nyerere National Park, Africa’s largest national park, is a recently constructed park that is part of the Selous Game Reserve.

The park is named after the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who was the nation’s founder.

The Park was founded in 2019 and spans a total area of more than 30,000 square kilometers. Nyerere National Park, Africa’s largest wilderness area, features relatively undisturbed ecological and biological processes, including a varied range of fauna with a strong predator-prey relationship. The Rufiji River drains into the Indian Ocean, bringing with it a renowned hippo and rhino population.

The river is a famous tourist site and has been recognized as a photography zone. The sheer quantity of wildlife in the Nyerere is incredible! Elephant, buffalo, and lion numbers are up, and the park, along with the rest of Selous, is the last true bastion for these animals.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Nyerere National Park

From late June to October, wildlife viewing in Nyerere National Park (previously Selous GR) is at its peak. Because animals congregate around water sources and vegetation is sparse, wildlife is easier to observe during the dry season. During the Wet Season, which runs from October to May, the environment is lush and green, but the afternoons may be oppressively hot.
