Active volcano
Ol Doinyo Lengai, East Africa’s sole active volcano, is located south of Lake Natron. The name means “Sacred Mountain of God” in Maasai. Mount Lengai stands 878 meters tall and erupts every twenty to forty years.
Climbs are typically scheduled around midnight in order to reach the top before daylight. Despite the fact that the route is difficult due to the heat (40°C) and hikers are encouraged to use extra caution, the views from Mount Lengai are breathtaking.
Lake Natron can be seen in the north, the Great Rift Valley can be seen in the west, and Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen in the east.
